Since pumps consume a lot of energy, a variable speed pump is an effective way to improve the efficiency of a pumping system. This is accomplished by determining the pressure needed at the outlet point and accordingly adjusting the speed at which the motor operates. This adjustment can be done manually or automatically, depending on the requirement of the pumping system. The motor moves the impeller only enough to push the required amount of fluid, rather than at a constant speed, like in conventional pumps. This reduces energy consumption and wear and tear, and increases the life of the motor.
The variation in motor speed can be brought about using a Variable Frequency Drive (for AC motors only) or a Variable Speed Drive (for AC and DC motors). Variable speed pumping systems are used in a wide range of applications – domestic, commercial and industrial. Here are some of the most common examples:
1. Domestic water systems
Pumps used to circulate water in homes are one of the best examples for the usage of variable speed pumps. Depending on whether it is a single shower by the inhabitants of the home, or two simultaneous showers, the motor changes its speed to pump out the required amount of water at a constant pressure. This is usually accomplished using a pressure sensor at the outlet point.
2. Oil pumps in motor vehicles
Engine oil pumps have used variable speed motors in all kinds of cars, trucks, and off-road vehicles. Fuel savings have ranged from 1% to as high as 5%!
3. Pump jacks
The reciprocating movement in pump jacks in oil wells results in load fluctuation. Since this is cyclic, the load requirement can be determined. Pumping systems are programmed to reduce output accordingly. Pump jacks are a commonly-used method for oil extraction, and the overall energy savings can be significant.
4. Submersible pumps
Submersible pumps are an everyday feature in homes and in commercial spaces. Examples range from an air pump in an aquarium to a feeder pump in a factory. In both cases, the volume of water required over time may vary, making a variable speed pumping system advantageous.
5. Water treatment facilities
Pumping and aeration are two of the most energy-intensive processes involved in the treatment of water. By using variable speed drives for pumps, water treatment facilities can ensure their pumps run at lower speeds and draw less energy, even while maintaining the desired pressure in distribution systems.
6. Swimming pool filtration systems
A pool filtration system is typically set to ensure that the entire volume of water gets filtered over a fixed duration. However, the water collected through the inlet fluctuates greatly through the time. Thus, a variable speed pump can effectively reduce the operating level of the filtration system when less water is passing through it.
