Why Replace Single Speed Pumps With Variable Speed?

Most pumps use lot of energy, which is why variable speed pumps are becoming widely used to improve efficiencies in domestic, commercial and industrial applications. They not only minimize the amount of energy used, they reduce wear and tear and increase the life of the motor.
By adjusting the speed at which the motor operates to meet outlet’s points pressure requirement, the motor pushes the amount of fluid necessary at optimum conditions, rather than at the single speed used by conventional pumps. Simply put, variable speed pumps let you adjust the volume of water in line with changing requirements over time.
Whether a variable speed pump is used in domestic water systems such as in showers, in swimming pool filtration systems, or industrial applications such HVAC systems or submersible feeder pumps in a factory, this process can be automated, allowing greater efficiencies. In water treatment plants, pumps can run at lower speeds to use less energy, even while meeting the necessary pressure requirements.

Here’s three of the main reasons why variable speed pumps win over single speed pumps:

1. Massive energy savings – A variable speed pump can run for a much longer time on the same amount of electricity that single speed pump of the same size would use in just an hour. While it’s an undeniable benefit that the speed of the motor can be adjusted to meet the rate of flow, technological advancements mean the design of variable speed pumps has improved to offer even more energy savings.

2. Single speed pumps move too much fluid – Single speed pumps pump more fluid than needed at any given time. For example, if you ran a single speed pump for a day, it would pump more than the amount of water required, whether to filter a swimming pool or a wastewater treatment plant.

3. Quiet operation – Single speed pumps can be noisy, especially the older ones that often have failing bearings! This is because both the speed of the motor in operation and the rate of flow can be excessive, creating vibration and noise. In fact, optimal flow rates are usually much lower than the rate at which single speed pumps usually operate, which is why variable speed pumps can result in greater efficiencies when adjusted. While much quieter than single speed pumps by default, when variable speed pumps are turned down to lower RPMs, they can become so quiet that you need to touch them just to know if they’re working!

Variable speed pumps are just more versatile.

Although a variable speed pump is a bit more expensive upfront than a single speed pump, it’s lower energy use and longevity will eliminate the difference in a very short time.

Don’t forget that single speed pumps are becoming increasingly outdated, which means you’ll also find it difficult to get parts or service it correctly.
