4 Chemical Pumps That Play a Key Role in Wastewater Treatment Operation

Treating wastewater is a thankless occupation, something the general public doesn’t think about unless there is a problem. Unless the sewers in the street are overflowing or there is a backup of sewage in their basement, it is honestly not something that enters their mind. For the companies and workers who deal with it on a daily basis, their equipment is key in processing waste water effectively. Their efforts help to keep contaminated water out of drinking sources. Those companies have come to rely on Vissers Sales Corp. as their chemical pumps supplier. As a leader among water treatment equipment suppliers, we provide the best equipment and service in the industry.

Wastewater Treatment Process

Initially, it might seem as if wastewater treatment is a pretty straightforward process. Untreated water comes into the treatment facility, where impurities are removed. Once the water has been treated, it is released into the environment. While that is the layman’s explanation, the actual treatment process is quite complicated. There are many different steps involved. Technical equipment utilizes various chemicals which come in various:

  • Viscosities
  • pH levels
  • Material Compatibilities
  • Handling Characteristics

What Types of Chemicals Are Used?

Various chemicals are used during wastewater treatment. The most common are listed below:

  • Sodium Hypochlorite
  • Sodium Hydroxide
  • Sodium Bisulfite
  • Emulsion Polymer

Sodium Hypochlorite

More commonly known as bleach, this is typically used as a cleaning and disinfectant agent at the treatment plant. While it is quite effective, it can be difficult to handle. This is due to the fact that is corrodes metal and cannot be mixed or stored with the following:

  • Acidic Compounds
  • Ammonia
  • Reducing Agents
  • Organics

Sodium Hydroxide

This is used to adjust the pH levels of the liquid solution. It is typically used in solution strengths of anywhere from 25% to 50%. This is done to regulate the acidic level of the solution.

Sodium Bisulfite

A dechlorinating agent, this is one of the most common on the market. A mixer of some sort is needed to keep the solution in the pump supply tank. It can be used in Kynar, PVC, or 316 stainless steel containers without concern.

Emulsion Polymer

This is used as a coagulant in dewatering equipment within the treatment facility.

The Four Types of Pumps Used

  • Mechanical Diaphragm Metering Pumps
  • Hydraulic Diaphragm Metering Pumps
  • Solenoid Diaphragm Metering Pumps
  • Peristaltic Pumps
